Netflix Abruptly Closes Gaming Studios Despite Recent Releases

Barely six weeks after the debut of the horror title "Unhinged," Netflix has shuttered its developer, Night School Studio, alongside the Helsinki-based team Moonloot. The unexpected closures continue a broader trend of consolidation within the streaming giant’s gaming division as it pivots away from internal AAA development efforts.

Netflix Abruptly Closes Gaming Studios Despite Recent Releases

The sudden dissolution of Night School Studio—the creative force behind the David Fincher and Zach Cregger-backed "Unhinged"—marks a sharp turn in Netflix’s interactive strategy. While a company spokesperson expressed gratitude toward the departing staff, leadership offered no specific justification for the decision. This move follows a recurring pattern of divestment and closure, including the earlier return of Spry Fox to its founders and the shutdown of the Boss Fight studio and the high-profile Team Blue project.

Under the direction of games president Alain Tascan, the platform is narrowing its focus toward four core pillars: children’s content, party games, narrative-driven experiences, and mainstream sports titles. With the internal studio roster significantly reduced, Netflix now relies more heavily on external partnerships and cloud gaming infrastructure to fill its library. The surviving internal capacity remains concentrated at Next Games, signaling a shift toward more specialized, scalable development projects rather than the ambitious, multi-studio expansion attempted in previous years.
