Smucker Streamlines Leadership, Cuts COO Role in Major Restructuring

The J.M. Smucker Co. is overhauling its executive suite, eliminating the position of chief operating officer and redistributing key responsibilities across its top leadership. Effective Feb. 9, the reorganization sees CEO Mark Smucker reclaim the title of president as the food giant pivots toward a more integrated management model and launches a search for its first AI-focused chief technology officer.

Smucker Streamlines Leadership, Cuts COO Role in Major Restructuring

The departure of COO John Brase triggered a broad redistribution of authority within the company. CFO Tucker Marshall has significantly expanded his remit, assuming the role of executive vice president for frozen handhelds, spreads, and sweet baked snacks while retaining his financial and sales oversight. According to the company, the move aims to consolidate leadership over high-growth categories.

Strategic Realignment and AI Focus

In a move to modernize its operations, Smucker is actively recruiting for a newly created Chief Technology Officer position to lead its artificial intelligence strategy. This technical expansion coincides with the promotion of Rob Ferguson to chief product supply officer and executive vice president, where he will oversee the coffee, pet food, and away-from-home divisions.

The company is also filling several other critical vacancies to support its new structure:

    • Senior Vice Presidents for operations and supply chain.
    • A leadership role for the science and technical community.
    • General management for the coffee and away-from-home businesses, now led by Tim Wayne.
The reshuffle also includes the promotion of Jill Penrose to chief people and administrative officer, a role that now encompasses corporate strategy. These changes come as long-time executives Randy Day and Byran Hutson prepare to retire following a transition period, marking a generational shift in the company's operational leadership.
