InterDigital Sues Hisense and TCL Over Video Patent Infringement

The litigation focuses on several critical video standards, including HEVC, VP9, and AV1, alongside high-dynamic-range formats essential for modern television displays. InterDigital, a research and development firm specializing in mobile, video, and AI, claims these technologies are foundational to the products sold by the two manufacturers.

A Multi-Jurisdictional Legal Strategy

The legal proceedings have been filed at the Munich Local Division of the Unified Patent Court and the Munich Regional Court in Germany, the Rio de Janeiro State Court in Brazil, and the Delhi High Court in India. This broad geographical approach reflects the global scale of the licensing dispute and the market reach of the defendants.

According to InterDigital Chief Legal Officer Josh Schmidt, Hisense and TCL have leveraged the company's engineering research to cement their positions as top-five global television manufacturers. Schmidt asserted that the litigation became necessary to protect the intellectual property developed by InterDigital and its partner, Sony.
