Orora Shares Surge to One-Year High on Saverglass Recovery

Shares of Orora jumped more than 8% on Thursday after the Australian packaging giant reported a first-half earnings beat and a A$200 million share buyback. The rally reflects renewed investor confidence in Saverglass, the premium glass manufacturer acquired in 2023, which finally posted volume growth after a prolonged post-acquisition slump.

Orora Shares Surge to One-Year High on Saverglass Recovery

Orora reported a first-half net profit that exceeded market expectations, prompting Jefferies to describe the result as "better than feared." The company’s stock climbed 8.2% to A$2.38 in Sydney trading, marking its highest level since early 2025. Beyond the profit beat, the board authorized a capital return program worth up to US$142.6 million, signaling a robust balance sheet despite recent integration challenges.

Rebounding Volumes at Saverglass

The primary driver of market optimism was the performance of Saverglass, which saw volumes rise by 2.6% during the six months ending in December. This modest growth represents a critical pivot for the division, reversing two consecutive half-year periods of contraction. Jarden analyst Jakob Cakarnis noted that the market’s focus is now shifting toward the business's operating leverage. If Orora can sustain this momentum through the 2027 fiscal year, the previous restructuring efforts are expected to significantly boost margins.

While Saverglass took center stage, Orora’s cans division delivered an 11% volume increase, surpassing analyst estimates. However, Citi analyst Samuel Seow pointed out that the division’s earnings remained largely in line with consensus, suggesting that the company may need to improve profitability margins if volume growth plateaus. Despite these concerns, Orora maintained its full-year guidance, projecting EBITDA growth across all business units.
