GEO Group Founder George Zoley to Reclaim CEO Role

GEO Group announced on Thursday that Chief Executive J. David Donahue will retire at the end of February, clearing the way for founder and executive chairman George Zoley to reassume the top post. Zoley, who established the Florida-based government services provider in 1984, is scheduled to take over day-to-day operations on March 1.

GEO Group Founder George Zoley to Reclaim CEO Role

The transition marks a significant shift for the Boca Raton, Fla.-based company. Donahue, a veteran of the firm since 2009, is stepping down after just over a year leading the organization. According to the company, his departure will see the return of the firm's most prominent figure to the helm of the government-service provider.

A Return to Founder Leadership

George Zoley brings decades of institutional experience back to the chief executive office. He previously served as the company’s leader from its initial public offering in 1994 through June 2021. Since his initial departure from the role, Zoley has continued to serve as executive chairman, maintaining a central role in the company's strategic oversight.

The leadership change consolidates power under the founder as GEO Group continues its operations in the specialized sector of government outsourcing. Zoley will hold the dual titles of CEO and executive chairman starting March 1, ensuring a seamless transition back to the leadership structure that defined the company for nearly thirty years.
