Ampol Earnings Surge on Strong Refining Margins

A Lytton Refiner Margin of US$23.92 per barrel—more than double the previous year's levels—propelled Ampol’s third-quarter earnings higher. Despite significant maintenance work at its Queensland refinery and ongoing geopolitical instability in the Middle East, the company leveraged tight fuel supplies and an integrated supply chain to bolster its quarterly performance.

Ampol Earnings Surge on Strong Refining Margins

Earnings before interest and tax for the three months ending in September surpassed the quarterly average recorded in the second half of 2025. This result was calculated on a replacement cost-of-sales basis, effectively neutralizing the volatility of fluctuating oil prices. While the Lytton facility operated under maintenance constraints during the quarter, management now plans to pull forward additional maintenance on a crude unit. This decision will likely lower the output of premium products like gasoline and jet fuel by approximately 150 million liters in the fourth quarter.

Beyond refining, the Convenience Retail segment reported double-digit growth in headline shop sales, excluding the impact of U-GO unstaffed sites and the recent EG Australia acquisition. Retail fuel margins remained stable despite rising input costs, a resilience the company attributes to its current product and channel mix. Integration of the EG Australia business remains on track, with leadership expressing confidence in achieving planned synergy targets. Furthermore, the commissioning of the Ultra Low Sulfur Fuels project at the Lytton refinery is now slated for the first quarter of next year.
