Japanese retailer Watt Mann Co. Ltd. posted a sharp increase in nine-month net profit, reaching ¥397 million despite a contraction in its core operating performance.

Watt Mann Net Profit Climbs 44% Amid Lower Operating Margins

The company, which trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under the ticker 9927.TO, reported revenue of ¥6.42 billion for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2024. This represents a steady increase from the ¥6.20 billion generated during the same timeframe in the previous fiscal year, suggesting resilient consumer demand.

Shifting Profit Margins

Despite the top-line growth, Watt Mann's operational efficiency faced headwinds. Operating profit declined to ¥374 million, down from ¥460 million a year prior. Pretax profit followed a similar trajectory, falling to ¥392 million from ¥468 million. The disconnect between the declining operating figures and the surging net profit highlights a significant impact from non-operating items or tax-related adjustments during the period.

The company’s bottom-line results, based on Japanese accounting standards, provided a boost for shareholders:

  • Earnings per share (EPS) climbed to ¥45.40, compared to ¥31.51 in the prior year.
  • Total net profit reached its ¥397 million mark, a 44% year-over-year increase.
    • The reporting period covers the first three quarters of the fiscal year ending March 2025.
