The new plants will focus on producing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) using a combination of artificial intelligence and high-tech manufacturing processes. This infrastructure is designed to scale production for AbbVie’s next-generation drug portfolio. According to the company, the facilities are expected to be fully operational by 2029 and will create approximately 300 new jobs in the Illinois region.
Strategic Alignment and Policy Trade-offs
This expansion follows a high-profile agreement between AbbVie and the Trump administration last month. Under the terms of the deal, the drugmaker pledged to spend $100 billion on domestic R&D and capital projects over the next decade. In exchange, the company secured exemptions from specific trade tariffs while agreeing to reduce prices on several medications.
