Wheat Futures Slump as Milder Weather Eases Crop Concerns
Wheat prices on the Chicago Board of Trade dropped on Monday as favorable weather forecasts for the U.S. and Russia mitigated supply fears, while corn futures found modest support from a surge in export inspections and shifting fund positions.
Wheat for May delivery fell 1.1% to $5.74 a bushel on the Chicago Board of Trade as improving weather across global growing regions pressured the market. According to Jack Scoville of Price Futures Group, temperatures are averaging above normal with rain forecast for parts of the Great Plains and Midwest. These developments have largely neutralized concerns regarding winterkill in the U.S., while the crop outlook in Russia remains stable despite recent ice blasts.
Corn futures bucked the downward trend, rising 0.2% to $4.40 3/4 a bushel. The gains followed a USDA report showing corn export inspections surged to 2.01 million metric tons for the week ended Feb. 19, nearly doubling the volume recorded during the same period last year. Market sentiment was further bolstered by data from the CFTC, which indicated that managed-money funds are aggressively covering short positions in corn, reducing exposure by nearly 23,000 contracts.
Trade Policy and Regulatory Hurdles
The market remains on edge regarding potential shifts in trade policy and renewable fuel mandates. President Trump signaled on social media that he intends to pursue new tariffs following a court ruling against previous measures, a move that could impact agricultural export demand. Simultaneously, traders are awaiting EPA proposals on renewable fuel volumes. AgResource noted that while these proposals are expected at the White House this week, a final decision may not be announced for another month.
Soybeans for May delivery slipped 0.3% to $11.50 1/4 a bushel as traders balanced political rhetoric against fundamental supply data. Market participants are now shifting their focus to several key indicators scheduled for release later this week:
- The USDA’s monthly Cold Storage report on Tuesday.
- Fourth-quarter earnings from The Mosaic Co. following Tuesday's market close.
- The EIA’s Weekly Petroleum Status Update on Wednesday morning.
