The Great Rib Robbery: How a Hijacked Truck Nearly Stalled Shake Shack

A truckload containing over 1,000 racks of boneless baby back ribs vanished in Mexico last month, leaving Shake Shack scrambling to salvage the launch of its new premium BBQ sandwich. The theft forced the company into an urgent supply chain scramble to keep the popular item on restaurant menus nationwide.

The Great Rib Robbery: How a Hijacked Truck Nearly Stalled Shake Shack

CEO Rob Lynch revealed the incident at the William Blair Growth Stock Conference, describing the logistical headache as a bizarre hurdle for the brand. The BBQ Boneless Baby Back Rib Sandwich, which debuted in late April, had been a significant driver for the chain, contributing to an 8% sales lift by early May. To compensate for the missing inventory, the company redirected resources to source ribs from alternative suppliers and maintain momentum.

Shake Shack opted for a lighthearted approach to the crisis, poking fun at the perpetrators on social media by wishing a Happy National BBQ Day to everyone except the "baby back bandits." This incident reflects a broader trend of rising cargo crime. Losses from transit theft in the U.S. climbed 60% last year, reaching a total of $725 million. Food and beverage items remain primary targets for thieves, as evidenced by a separate case in March where 12 tons of KitKat bars disappeared while being transported between Italy and Poland.
