PepsiCo Deploys Autonomous Semi Fleet to Retail Hubs

A 26,000-pound truck hauling Doritos and Fritos rolls onto public roads without a human behind the wheel. PepsiCo has officially scaled its autonomous logistics program, operating 41 driverless vehicles across Texas, Arizona, and Arkansas to supply major retail partners like Walmart and Dollar General in a shift toward automated supply chains.

PepsiCo Deploys Autonomous Semi Fleet to Retail Hubs

The fleet, engineered by startup Gatik using Isuzu chassis, has logged zero accidents since fully autonomous operations commenced in June 2025. Performance metrics indicate a 99% on-time delivery rate, proving the feasibility of the technology for short-haul warehouse-to-retail routes. With $600 million in multiyear contracts now secured, Gatik is positioning itself as a central player in the commercial trucking overhaul.

This transition presents a significant labor challenge. PepsiCo leadership stated the company intends to grow its distribution network without a proportional increase in human headcount, signaling a move toward long-term workforce reduction. The Teamsters union is pushing state legislatures to mandate human operators in all commercial autonomous vehicles, setting the stage for a broader regulatory clash between logistics efficiency and labor stability.
