Ramaswamy Backs Attack Ad Targeting Opponent’s Traumatic Past

With Election Day looming in Ohio, Republican gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy has claimed full ownership of a controversial campaign spot featuring his opponent Amy Acton’s estranged mother. The move, which has sparked widespread condemnation, marks a sharp escalation in the battle for the statehouse as both campaigns enter the final stretch.

Ramaswamy Backs Attack Ad Targeting Opponent’s Traumatic Past

The minute-long advertisement, which initially surfaced on social media without required legal disclosures, depicts Acton’s mother accusing the Democratic candidate of dishonesty regarding her upbringing. Acton, a physician currently leading in state polls, responded with a harrowing account of her childhood, detailing sexual abuse by her mother’s husband in the late 1970s. She stated that she has not seen her biological mother since testifying against the man in 1978, at which point the couple fled the state.

Despite the backlash, the Ramaswamy campaign is reportedly investing $4 million to broadcast the spot statewide. While his team characterizes the ad as a decisive blow to Acton's candidacy, political observers suggest the strategy risks significant voter alienation. Philip Stearns, Acton’s brother, denounced the tactic as a moral failing, while election analyst Logan Phillips predicted the maneuver could cost Ramaswamy the race, citing the visceral reaction of voters to the exploitation of a candidate’s history of trauma.
